AIDS 2020: Virtual Webinars
To encourage participation of trans and gender diverse communities in AIDS 2020: Virtual, GATE hosted two webinars to discuss how it will work, what to expect, and why it is important for trans and gender diverse people to be actively engaged in the conference.
Webinar 1: What to Expect at AIDS 2020: Virtual!
When the IAS started to plan the AIDS 2020 conference, no-one expected a new pandemic to force us into learning how to use new technology to come together virtually.
In order to prepare attendees and give them an overview of what to expect, GATE invited the following speakers to present at the webinar:
- Emily Blitz, IAS Conferences Director, gave an update on how AIDS 2020: Virtual will work and what to expect; and
- Abhina Aher, India HIV/AIDS Alliance Associate Director of Gender, Sexuality and Rights, shared her personal experience of attending an International AIDS Conference.
Erika Castellanos, GATE Director of Programs, moderated the webinar, including the Question and Answer session at the end.

Webinar 2: Trans Participation at AIDS 2020: Virtual
As a key population, it is essential that trans and gender diverse participants feel empowered to actively participate at AIDS 2020: Virtual. This webinar provided a platform for trans and gender diverse participants to ask questions and find out how to make the most of attending the virtual conference, both inside the main conference, and within the Global Village, which is freely accessible to all.
GATE invited the following speakers to present on this topic:
- JoAnne Keatley, IRGT Chair, presented a historical overview of the participation of trans people in the AIDS conference, and talked about the importance of involving and engaging the trans community at the conference;
- Max Appenroth, GATE Project Coordinator of the Trans Men and HIV Working Group,
spoke about the International Trans Men and HIV working group and shared information about GATE’s NGO booth; and - Michelle Ross, CliniQ Co-founder and Director of Holistic Wellbeing Services, presented the Trans Networking Zone “Thriving in Our Diversity!”
This session was moderated by Erika Castellanos – GATE Director of Programs, and included a Q&A session.
